I hate when I have a lot of things to do but my emotion take control of me, it makes me feel like I don’t want to do anything. I hate it so much to the point that I wish I have no emotion ever, I wish I can’t feel sad, angry, or happy so that I can do everything I wanted to do.

But, a story makes me rethinking of my decision.

Did you know that when you don’t have an emotion, you can’t make a decision?

From this article source, I read that there’s a case of a man named Elliot.

He is really intelligent, a role model to his colleagues and a great husband.

He had a fantastic memory,

until his life fall apart.

Elliot suffers from a brain tumor wounded in the frontal lobe tissue in his brain and eventually had to get those removed.

What’s happen after that?

Suddenly, he shows a declining in his performance. All the project he did in his job were either left unfinished or done poorly, to the point that he losses his job. He got divorced from his wife, married again, only to be divorced once again. He’s been trick to a moneymaking scheme to the point of bankruptcy.

He then starts to see a doctor. There, the doctor starts to searching for the cause of the reason behind Elliot declining performance. Before, Elliot was an intelligent man, but the doctor found out that now he can spends hours in his office only to figuring out how to categorize his documents.

Yet, he shows an incredible result on his cognitive faculties. He shows no declining on his memory and still handy on math. So what could be the reasons of it?

The doctors found a realization that Elliot’s intelligence might not be the case. A neuroscientist make him do a test with emotionally charged images, like pictures of accidents. The results is that Elliot could sense that those images used to give him strong emotions, but now they’re just neutral. He knows what kind of emotion he should be feeling, but he felt nothing.

What was even more confounding is that Elliot could think up lots of options for a decision, but he can’t make a decision himself. Looking at Elliot medical history, and a patient from back in 1930s, the doctors concluded that when emotion was impaired, so was decision-making.

This leds the doctors named Damasio to get a more understanding of human brain. When you’re thinking of an action, you body also react to it and you get either a good or bad feeling about it. These filters away a lots of alternative as a shortcut to a decision making.

If you’ve been through a lot in life, then you must have known how it feels in variety of situations. This allows you to make a better decisions next time. Without having those kind of emotions, you can’t know what decisions is good or bad. You simply can’t make a decisions.

So, having an emotions is not bad after all. Sure, it can affect your whole day, but without it, you can’t make any decisions. But also, having or feeling a lot of emotions at once can be overwhelming, what you can do is finding a way on how to overcome and control any emotions you are feeling.

Credit to The Cut, I basicly rewrite their article for this but I am using this as a media to practice my writing and this is one of my non-data science article since a long time! I think I will be posting a lot of this kinds of article in the next months or years. Let’s just pray I will be consistent in writing.

Thank you for reading! Hope you all have a great and amazing day, whatever you are feeling :)
